Oura Ring Review: The Breakdown

Hello my loves!!! Today I wanted to share my full review on the Oura ring now that I have been using it for 7 months. The Oura ring is a wearable device that tracks your sleep and activity. Although the Oura ring is a bit bulky, it’s actually very comfortable. It doesn’t bother me at all during the day or while I’m sleeping.

I personally was interested in getting the Oura ring because I know how sleep can affect blood sugars. I was curious to see how my sleep effected my blood sugars and how my blood sugars were affecting my sleep. I know how important sleep is for my health. My Oura ring has really helped me figure out how I’m sleeping and what rituals and routines I can implement for a better sleep.

I’ll usually wear my Oura ring during the day as well because it tracks your activity/steps for the day which I love. I like to track my steps because I aim to get 10K steps a day. The Oura ring will give you a sleep score, readiness score, and an activity score. It also has meditations on the app. One thing I love about the Oura ring is that under each category that it’s measuring, it will give you an explanation on what it is, why it’s important, and how it optimize that specific category.

The 3 Areas Oura Ring Measures

Sleep Score:

Your sleep score measures your total sleep and your time in bed, which was something that I never differentiated until getting my Oura ring. It also measures your REM sleep, deep sleep, and light sleep. I love being able to track this. I am learning how important REM sleep is and how difficult it can be to get the right amount of REM sleep. Through the Oura ring app and blog I’ve been able to learn how to get better REM sleep. The Oura ring also measures your sleep efficiency, restfulness, timing and latency. I tend to get up in the middle of the night because of my Dexcom alerts, so I was curious to see how this was affecting my sleep. The good news is that it usually doesn’t affect my sleep. When I wake up in the middle of the night, even if it’s a few times, I’m usually able to fall back asleep pretty quickly.

Readiness Score:

The Oura ring will give you a readiness score that is comprised of a few things. It measures your resting heart rate, your heart rate variability and body temperature. It will also take into account your sleep and activity for the day. Your readiness score is basically how well your body has recovered. I’ve personally noticed I have a little more trouble getting an optimal readiness score than I do sleep score. Your resting heart rate and heart rate variability are two aspects that are really important for the readiness score. I’ve noticed when my blood sugar is high overnight from a large/heavy dinner, or if I’ve had alcohol at night, it increases my resting heart rate overnight which decreases my readiness score. I’ve also noticed the more I move my body throughout the day and get my blood flowing, it will help to improve my readiness score.

Activity Score:

The activity score will take into account your steps throughout the day and how many miles you’ve walked. It will also measure how well you’ve stayed active throughout and give you alerts to ensure you’re moving every hour to keep that blood flowing. It will measure a workout, but you have to tag on the app that you are doing a workout and it can measure your heart rate and the intensity during the workout. If you are working out and wearing your Oura ring, it will not track the workout unless you tag it so make sure you’re tagging it in the app!

EMF Note: I do want to mention that the Oura ring works by using Bluetooth. According to the Oura ring website it emits a small amount of EMFs, but there is also an option to keep the Oura ring on airplane mode and while you’re wearing it and sync it when you are ready to get your updates.

Overall, I love my Oura ring and I have learned a lot about my sleep patterns. I’ve always been a pretty good sleeper but ever since getting diagnosed with T1D I am learning how important sleep truly is for overall health and wellness. When I was in college my mindset was “sleep when you’re dead”, but that has really changed. Right now, I am on a healing journey and am really focused on healing, and that can’t happen without a good night’s sleep.

An Oura ring is a great gift to give someone in your life so I hope this full review is helpful before making the purchase.

Sending love, light, and a good night’s sleep.

Xoxo
