Getting Back to Healthy

Hello everyone! It has been a little while since I’ve posted a blog! This week I wanted to touch upon overall health and getting back on track. I think so often the term health gets confused or overlapped with weight loss. Yes you need to maintain a healthy weight but you also need to ensure you are getting enough vitamins, minerals and nutrients to maintain overall health.

When I was first diagnosed with T1D, I was honestly a little bit shocked because I thought I was a healthy person that lived somewhat of a healthy lifestyle. Once I really started investing in my health, I quickly realized that wasn’t exactly the case. A few months after diagnosis I started going to Parsley Health, which is a functional medicine doctor. I wanted to get back on track with my health. I had one autoimmune disease and most certainly did not want another. I knew my health was jeopardized and I wanted to get ahead of any other illness or disease.

I truly believe in holistic, functional medicine, which focuses on the mind, body, and spirit. Because your mind, body and spirit are truly all connected. While T1D is primarily an autoimmune disease that effects the pancreas, I knew that my body was not in homeostasis and my overall health was compromised.

I have always gone to the doctor and got regular blood tests. For the most part my blood tests have come back normal with in range numbers, but that did not necessarily mean my health was optimal. What is considered normal on a blood test is the average of the population, but most of our population is not in perfect health. So normal does not mean optimal and I wanted optimal health. Surely enough after getting blood tests done, my microbiome was compromised and I was deficient in SO many (too many) vitamins and minerals: iron, zinc, vitamin d, magnesium, omega-3, etc.

So I started my journey to get my health back on track. This meant eating whole nutritious foods as much as possible, and supplementing when needed. One of the reasons I love Parsley Health is because my doctor doesn’t always jump to give me a vitamin or supplement. Instead, we look at which foods/herbs to incorporate that is high in a certain vitamin or mineral I’m lacking. Unfortunately, our soil and the food we consume does not have the minerals and nutrients that it used to have, which is why it is also important to supplement when you need to.

I am most certainly still on my healing journey, but I am so happy I chose to invest in myself and my health when I did last year.

In case you needed to hear it: go to your doctor regularly, get your blood checked, and ASK QUESTIONS. If you don’t understand something, ask them to dumb it down. If you don’t like your doctor, simply find a new one. Your health is so important. Unfortunately, we don’t always have the best resources, so it needs to be taken into our own hands.

Sending love, light and positivity
