The Power Of Movement

If you told me 5 years ago I would love exercise and moving my body the way I do now, I would have never believed you. I just thought it was something I would do to lose weight but never love it. Now I literally love to move my body because it makes me feel so good. I genuinely feel and look my best now and think I worked out harder 5 years ago. I did a lot of HIIT and cardio and was in the gym for at least an hour. In college I remember I would kill myself working out and it was just not a fun time. I thought you had to sweat, be out of breath and be so sore after a workout for it to have been effective.

Now I have learned that working out is so much more than losing weight – it’s about moving your body in a way that feels good for you so you can keep your body healthy and strong. I genuinely look forward to working out each day. It always makes me feel so good and gives me mental clarity. It sets the tone for my day when I work out first thing in the morning and helps me unwind after a long day of sitting at a desk and staring at a computer. Moving my body and working out is a time I set aside for myself, to be present with myself for 20-30 mins. When I can’t workout, or want to take the day off, it’s never something I feel bad about, which I also think is extremely important.  I always listen to my body and never beat myself up for not working out.

Currently, my favorite workouts are Melissa Wood Health’s program and Megan Roup’s The Sculpt Society. MWH is my go-to for lower intensity workouts because it’s a mix of yoga and pilates. I absolutely love all her workouts and I can 100% credit her and her workouts for my love of movement. Just because they’re low intensity does NOT mean they are easy. It’s all about small, gentle, yet effective moves.

When I want a little extra spiciness or want to throw in cardio to get my heart rate up (because that is also very important), I’ll do a Sculpt Society workout. I think Megan Roup’s workouts are great for cardio and adding in strength training. They’re so hard and I always break a sweat after.  Her dance cardio is SO fun (even though I look crazy doing them).

I like to include a little cardio and walking in my exercise routine because I have found that those are the workouts that will lower/stabilize my blood sugars. A nice long walk will almost always bring my stubborn high blood sugars down and I love a good walking meditation through the neighborhood.

Everyone knows exercise is good for you, but once you find something you love, it will motivate you to want to move your body each day and take care of yourself. Always do what works for you but I think it is very important to find a type of movement that you love.

Love this perspective on working out. “it’s about moving your body in a way that feels good for you so you can keep your body healthy and strong”. It def. makes it less dreadful!
